Marianne Gautier of Tria Woman on how we can tackle a common ailment in the 21st century: stress

Stress – we experience it on a daily basis as our lives are increasingly busy with work commitments, children to ferry around, a family and home to look after, bills to pay… it’s no surprise that many of us are stressed out a lot of the time! And while it may be difficult to avoid, there are ways we can learn how to manage the stress in our lives. By understanding how and why we react to certain situations, will give us an awareness that allows us to gain control over how we respond.

Stress from feelings of anger, fear or frustration are an unavoidable part of day to day life, but if it is excessive or long term then it can have devastating effects on our mental and physical wellbeing.

Stress stimulates the adrenal glands, which release adrenaline and cortisol hormones into the blood to gear the body for action, great if we are in danger, but when this is stuck in a continuous cycle, excessive levels of stress hormones cause problems which show up as anxiety, headaches, stiffness, insomnia and digestive issues.

How we think and respond will have a direct effect upon the body, either in a negative or positive way, which means that we can be active participants in our own wellbeing. The mind-bodyconnection is the link between our thoughts and emotions (the mind), and the physical which includes all the systems of the body through to the cells. In Western medicine this is a relatively new concept as the mind and body were seen as two separate entities; however, in Eastern medicine such as Ayurveda, the connection is seen as integral to the philosophy of health and healing. We can’t always avoid stress, but we always have the power to choose how we respond to it if we have the right tools.

At Tria Woman we understand that every woman has her own unique needs and experiences, and supporting the counselling process with individual lifestyle, nutrition and mindfulness practices creates a tailored approach which honours mind, body and soul.
