From family racedays to Chicago coming to town, some of the best events in Berkshire and Buckinghamshire throughout March
From 4 March
Newbury Racecourse has plenty in store for you in 2022, with the BetVictor Opening Weekend on 4 March, followed by the start of the flat season over the Easter Weekend on Saturday 16 and Sunday 17 April with the Dubai Duty Free Spring Trials meeting. This is one of the first chances in the season to see some of the early Group races and is always a weekend to savour. Two days of family fun include the Racing Experience Day on Saturday 16 April, where everyone including young racegoers will get the chance to have a look into the racing world with opportunities to meet and be a jockey, learn about ownership, book signings as well as a collection of fun family activities.
‘Three Degrees’ soul sensation Sheila Ferguson will star as ‘Mama Morton’ alongside acclaimed classical signer Russell Watson as Billy Flynn in the UK and Ireland tour of the international smash hit musical Chicago, coming to Buckinghamshire this month. Set amidst the razzle-dazzle decadence of the 1920s, Chicago is the story of Roxie Hart, a housewife and nightclub dancer who murders her on-the-side lover after he threatens to walk out on her. Desperate to avoid conviction, she dupes the public, the media and her rival cellmate, Velma Kelly, by hiring Chicago’s slickest criminal lawyer to transform her malicious crime into a barrage of sensational headlines, the likes of which might just as easily be ripped from today’s tabloids.
The Wicker Husband
Folk-inspired new musical The Wicker Husband tells the timeless tale of the outsider. Ostracised by the shallow townsfolk because she doesn’t fit in, the Ugly Girl becomes the envy of her neighbours when the mysterious Old Basketmaker makes her a strong and loving husband woven from living wicker. As bitter rivalry and jealousy threaten to tear the community apart, the townsfolk embark on a cruel and destructive plan. Will the Ugly Girl’s happiness be ruined forever?
12 March-29 May
A major survey of Guyanese-born British artist and photographer Ingrid Pollard will be presented at MK Gallery – the first exhibition to fully explore Pollard’s pioneering and experimental practice, from the 1980s to the present day, and examine her substantial contribution to British art. Pollard is renowned for using photography as social practice, working with portrait and landscape photography to question our relationship with the natural world and interrogate social constructs such as Britishness, race, sexuality, and identity.
From 23 March
From 23 March, the Manor at Waddesdon will re-open for visitors to enjoy and explore the exceptional collection within. Having been ‘put to bed’ over the winter months for important cleaning and conservation work, as spring approaches, Waddesdon’s stewards will be reinstating the rooms ready for another season.
Enjoy delightful family fun at Ascot Racecourse this month. The Spring Family Raceday, on Sunday 27 March, is Ascot’s first dedicated family day in 2022, and there are plenty of delights in store this year. Fortuitously falling on Mothering Sunday, this is the perfect opportunity to spend an action-packed afternoon of Jumps racing and family-friendly activities in the company of your nearest and dearest.
